Choosing Your Perfect Toyota Prius (Seth Walker)

Shopping for a new car these days can be a fun and exciting experience. For those who are on a budget and environmentally conscious, the Toyota Prius could be the perfect choice. The 2013 Prius is sleek, sexy and stylish, while remaining environmentally friendly.

In the current model year, the Prius family has grown to four. There are now four different Prius' to choose from, each catering to a different set of needs, while still managing to fit into a tight budget. In addition, each of these models offers anywhere from an impressive estimated 95 mpg on the highway and 50 mpg in the city to a modest 44 mpg on the highway and 40 mpg in the city. And that's modest for a Prius.

The original Prius is the Prius that started them all and still continues to lead the pact. Offering 51 mpg in the city and 48 mpg on the highway, the Prius also has the option to run on battery power alone for a mile. The original Prius is available in four different trims, each having their own set of options, but all having an impressive safety system. The safety system includes an enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, an Anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist and smart stop technology.

The Prius C, or the city version of the Prius, is the smallest and most affordable member in the family. Getting better fuel economy than the original Prius, with 53 mpg city and 46 mpg, it has the highest estimated city mpg of any vehicle without a plug. The choice of using gas or electric is yours and can be changed at the touch of a button with the innovative EV/ECO modes device. The little guy also comes with SofTex trimmed seats and nine air bags. This car is billed as a city vehicle, and it lives up to its billing. It is small, maneuverable, quick and economically smart, and it comes with all of the options that help keep the driver's attention on the road.

The Prius V is the biggest Prius in the family. This model gives up a little mpg for the extra space, yet 44 mpg city and 40 mpg highway is nothing to blink at, especially when you consider the extra space that you are getting in the deal. With 34.3 cubic feet of cargo space, the Prius V has more cargo room than many small SUV's. Toyota markets the V as a family vehicle because it can transport a family and their belongings, while retaining its eco-friendly reputation. In addition to the extra, it has climate control that includes a humidity sensor, dust and pollen filtration mode, an electric compressor and push-button controls.

The last member of the Prius family is the most advanced thus far. It is the Prius Plug In, and it is exactly that: a car that you plug in. While keeping the Prius look, its lines are smoother and slicker then the others. The vehicle can be plugged into a home outlet and can be recharged in only three hours. This car will run on EV mode for as long as it can, getting 95 mpg, and then automatically turn to ECO mode and a fuel economy of 50 mpg highway. It is capable of going an estimated 11 miles on EV mode alone, and it can travel that distance at an estimated top speed of 62 miles per hour.

Every Prius in the family is environmentally friendly, stylish and roomy. No matter your lifestyle or budget, there is a Prius for that. Looking for a new car? Stop by your local Toyota dealership and find the Prius for you.
